Dear friend,I spent October 17th and 18th at a wonderful conference in Toronto given by April Steele on helping clients to develop a secure self and increase their self esteem. With this technique almost anybody can feel more secure and increase their self esteem because most of us have had a traumatic event or a lack of emotional support at a particular age. This guided imaginal nurturing can replenish you by providing the nurturing that was missed earlier in your life. The advantage to you is once the younger parts of yourself, whose needs went unrecognized, get the nurturing they need, your adult self feels more contented and whole. The real benefit to you will be that this approach can enhance your therapy to improve self-esteem and resolve a range of Please read the article below to find out more about this technique and how it can support your therapeutic process. Developing a Secure Self - Nurturing the Child WithinAccording to attachment theory, our early attachment patterns to significant caregivers, especially in the first five years of life, predict the way we develop relationships throughout our lives. Based on our early nurturing, our attachment patterns can be secure, pre-occupied (overly emotional and attached), or dismissive (lacking access to emotions and few intimate relationships). Early attachment patterns can change, but they must be changed on a sub-conscious as well as a conscious level for the changes to manifest in our current and future relationships. Meditation is one way of resolving these attachment patterns and changing the way we relate to others. Many kundalini yoga meditations are excellent for this purpose. Imaginal nurturing (guided visualization), caring for the younger parts of ourselves during a session, and then celebrating our younger selves between sessions is an extremely powerful technique in this work. When we develop a nurturing relationship with the younger parts of ourselves that have been neglected, their needs get met and our adult selves become more contented and whole. The advantage to you is that your current relationships will evolve to become more mutually supportive as your responses and actions change to reflect your growing self-esteem. The real benefit to you is as the younger parts of yourself get the recognition and attention they need, issues such as anxiety, depression, and addictions start to resolve themselves. After an imaginal nurturing session where I worked with a client on nuturing a part of himself who was not allowed to be independent at an early age, he purchased a doll of himself to represent the age when he lacked the ability to show independence. He read the doll affirmations about his strength and independence, and read adventure stories suitable for his age at the time. By the next week, the client already felt that he was finding more ways to feel independent in his adult life, and he took the step of requesting and gaining a promotion at work. This poem by Derek Walcott captures the essence of the Developing a Secure Self approach. The time will come and say, sit here. Eat. You will love again the stranger who was your self. all your life, whom you ignored the photographs the desperate notes, Best wishes for November.
