Why do EMDR therapy?
EMDR acceses small and large traumatic memories to integrate right and left brain processing. Intrusive emotions and repetitive patterns are replaced with a sense of freedom and ease. First developed for Vietnam War Veterens experiencing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, this therapy is widely validated by 20 years of clinical research and has been given the top tier efficacy rating by the American Psychiatric Association for relief of PTSD.
EMDR is the fastest way that I know of to reprogram your subconcious after a single event or repeated trauma. Often, clients can get over a trauma such as an accident or sudden death within just a few sessions. The memory still exists, but it is no longer accompanied by overwhelming emotions or unwanted images.
EMDR first starts out with a thorough client history, then moves into resource development where you learn ways to relax and rejeuvenate on a daily basis. Then we do the actual reprocessing sessions where you hold the negative memory in mind while bilateral stimulation is given through pulsars or ear tones. Often a single processing session is enough to clear even major issues. Once past issues are cleared, you go on to visualize future recurrences of the same or similar event and how you will deal with it differently in the future.
Most clients are amazed at the difference EMDR makes in their daily functioning. These differences are confirmed by SPECT brain scans showing healthier brain functioning after EMDR.
