Seven Steps to Happiness

September 11, 2009

This week’s thought of the week is Yogi Bhajan’s seven steps to happiness.  Everyone wants to be happy yet so many aren’t.  One thing to realize is that happiness is not dependent on external circumstances, but our attitude towards them.

Happiness comes from giving and having an attitude of gratitude.  Giving creates space for us to receive more of the good that the universe has to offer.  An attitude of gratitude then tends to pull more of the circumstances we are grateful for our way.

To be happy we have to drop our negative habits and programming to realize the core spiritual self.  Yoga, meditation, counselling, hypnosis, and EMDR can all be tools to help with this achievement.  Happiness takes a commitment to being positive no matter what the circumstances.  True happiness goes beyond momentary pleasure or enjoyment and becomes a perpetual state of being.  Yogi Bhajan has a unique definition of happiness, which involves developing the seven qualities listed in the article below.

Seven Steps to Happiness

Commitment: to kindness and compassion, it gives you character.
Character: is a pattern of behaviour where you can clearly answer and stand before your own consciousness, it leads to dignity.
Dignity: is when you act as an example of Spirit for another, then you gain divinity.
Divinity: is when you put yourself on the line to serve another, which leads you to grace.
Grace: is when you’ve developed a presence that works so that you have the power to sacrifice.
Sacrifice: is when your core identity sits in your heart and presides in your head which takes you to achievement.
Happiness: is when you can be thankful for the ability to embody these seven qualities
